StarFleet Command Gold Edition (c) Interplay / 14 East

iSO, released by FAiRLiGHT 05-25-00. nfo

Star Trek: StarFleet Command Gold Edition (SFC), well first of all I need to say I dig the star trek shit, I'm not fanatic trekker who goes to conventions with spok ears, but I have like most of the STTNG episodes on videotape, so I really looked forward to seeing great Star Trek game.
The main iSO was released by Fairlight and was 30 x 15mb, it unrarred and burn without a clitch, install was a snap, no need for cracked exe copy or anything. Nice.

SFC is very nice on graphics department, but where it really shines is the sound. Oh my, when I first started the game I thought "wtf, did I download SFC VCD or iSO??" hehe, yeah first you see Paramount movie studios logo and then some nice intro. Its done completely by game graphics so nothing truly special, lot of different starships fighting each other, and lot of explosions, basically everything blows up :)
The actual game setup allows you to select the most standard resolutions (I picked 1280*1024), the setup layout itself is standard startrek design and looks ok. The game interface is the same look, no problems it really helps to bring the startrek feeling.
There are three types of gameplay; Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer. I have tried the skirmis which consists of few ready to go missions or you can customize your own. Campaign looks nice, I didnt go into too deep to it, but there is nice database of shit about the ships & galaxys races etc. I listened the cool speech of all the races in the game, I think the narrator was captain ... err what was his name, (uh feeling the true trekkies laughing at me:) well the japanese guy :) Anyhow.

The game itself, the battles are detailed with technical stuff from star trek, I mean there is tons of shit you can do with your starship, and frankly... without a manual and hardcore-fantatic knowledge I was pretty much out there on my own getting ass kicked all the time (didnt like beat any enemies at all, aww). The graphics looks great in the battle scenes, lot of phasers & foton torpedoes firing etc. There is not too much of background graphics, but then again what crap would you see in space... black & stars, right? Yup. In some missions there is some blackholes, asteroids, planets, weird nebula etc, so the background is not entirely just stars on the space.
So I suck on this game, but I wont say it sucks because it didnt, some hardcore trekker or maybe someone who buys the manual OR who has lot of time to study this game, will definitely findt it good, as basically I did but as I said, there was not too much of shit I understood in the game, I just blasted away :)

update:
I noticed there are manual on the cd install in adobe acrobat format. Fullmanual, Supplemental manual and Updated ship datas. Very much detailed information about the races and all their ships are included in the fullmanual, and some last minute updated information (pages and pages), in updated ship data. Looks good, The fullmanual consists of 160pages, which to me looks very good, it has this flight-sim manual potential, quite detailed data also (by browsing the index). You might want to check them out if you want to polish your skills as wannabe Jean Luc Picard.

Conclusion

Good release, works 100%. game is good if you are true star trek fan, game could be average if you do not know shit about star trek technical stuff. I dont really know how deep the campaign etc is, so there might be completely different world buried in the depths of Star Trek StarFleet Command space...
